introducing 'mek 10'

MEK 10 is a book I produced for the book-binding project in first year. I got discount on moleskines, so I got really into filling them with little comic drawings as the paper's really nice for line drawings. it was the first time I just got to have fun drawing whatever I wanted, however I wanted, just like when I was a child - and win marks for it. rather than follow any great narrative, I just used the book to showcase the tone, the humour, and the style of my work. here's a bunch from it.

in more recent times, I've learned that paperchase sketchbooks have exactly the same lovely paper are are super cheap and you can get square-format ones. now i'm like, moleskine? feh! chances are you're not the next shakespeare or hemingway, so you don't need to spend £6 more being told so by some arse-kissing little strip of paper.

why i hate inter-city bus travel

next time you're on a megabus, notice how many boys shuffle their bags in front of their crotches as they stand up at the end of the journey. I'm sorry yeah but I refuse to believe mine's the only one that does this.
I think it's also quite interesting that I know I did this in march because I have no tash and that's the only month I shaved. my facial hair sucks that much.

introducing 'my pet shark'

My Pet Shark is the story of what would happen if I had a bipedal shark for a pet. I have to share a bed with him and he snores, and he eats all the food, and I can't play out with the skaters cos he bites everyone's skateboard. he just fucks everything up.
so I hide from him, and eventually he gets upset and leaves. I miss the shark, and after a while I learn that as much of a pain as he is, the fact he's always there with what I experience means he's part of me - and he comes back. and everything is brilliant ever after.

in the story, everyone has a huge sea creature representing their sexual identity. the shark is a phallic symbol; powerful, energetic, but lacking direction; my character goes to ex-sea creature communion and meets a lesbian with a similar problem with a... big octopus. the story is a simple allegory for the final part of the coming-out process - living openly as a gay person - and despite its adult themes, I'd like to think it'd be good to show to kids. unless you're all, y'know, GOD HATES SHARKS about everythin.

also, definitely just gonna make quite small posts from now on. trying to get ambitious with blogspot is like trying to get blood out of a tetris block.

katie price and her equally irritating nobody ex-husband peter andre, who contrary to popular belief, still isn't worth a shit just cos he's a good father.

introducing 'fluorescent lighting', more 'beauty in the struggle'

I haven't updated in ages so I mauled jamie jones' scanner to try and catch up.

Flourescent Lighting is something I've been workin on in developing my final outcome: a study of silhouettes, and silhouettes can leave and impression and ultimately define how something is perceived. I wanted to explore the powerful and sometimes disorienting effect of intense black-and-white contrast - hoping to suggest the flickering of the fluorescent lighting every locale in my everyday life is illuminated by. silhouettes are essentially a contrast in their surroundings created by the shape of whoever casts it; ultimately, a mark of a person's visual impact.

what's interesting is how altering one's silhouette changes the impact they make, and thus how they are perceived. only the naked, shaven body can cast a 'real' silhouette. everything else - clothes, hats, hairstyles - ultimately affects how the person is defined.

the altered silhouette, I find, is a symbol of artifice - a conscious move to affect how one is perceived. I compare this artifice with the idea of truth and lies, fantasy and reality.

I found myself looking at drugs culture as a symbol of artifice - using drugs being to immerse oneself in an artificial mindset, a chemically-altered state of being where one's fears, insecurities and worries are minimal, or even nonexistent - and as I found myself at party after party, I thought about how my drawings could resemble fevered thoughts, rambling conversations - and the kind of scrap doodles you might find passed around for fun at a sesh.

with the contrast created by black and white I aim to suggest that feeling of being in a room lit by a fluorescent light that's flickering just enough for you to notice, but not enough to focus on, and that weird little confused tension you feel under it.

I've been working in my journal also additionally as well.

bear safe for readin breh, s'been jokes. happy new year an shit.
